The Challenge
About Chalice Mining Limited
Chalice Mining Limited is an ASX-listed exploration and mining company, best known for its world-class Julimar Nickel-Copper-PGE Project in Western Australia. Established in 2006, the company has built a strong reputation in the mining and resources sector for its innovative approach to mineral exploration and its commitment to sustainability.
Since FY20/21, Perspektiv has been helping Chalice measure and report its carbon footprint.
Where They Started
Initially, Chalice knew they needed to meet sustainability reporting requirements but weren’t entirely sure what data to track or how to present it effectively. Early reports were developed using incomplete datasets, making it difficult to obtain a complete picture of their environmental impact. Life Cycle Assessment Specialists of Perspektiv were brought in to provide clarity and structure not only for Scope 1 & 2 emissions, but also for relevant Scope 3 emissions.
Our Approach
To help Chalice get the most out of their reporting, we focused on two key areas:
Better Data Collection & Tracking – Implementing structured processes to consistently track activity and emissions data year after year.
Stronger Reporting Framework – Enhancing Chalice’s carbon footprint reports so the results could be easily transferred into their S&P DJSI submission and used to support verification.
Key Steps We Took
Refining Scope Boundaries: Conducted annual reviews to ensure the right data was being captured.
Creating Tracking Templates: Standardised energy, water, and waste data collection.
Aligning with GHG Protocol: Ensured compliance with global best practices for corporate emissions reporting across the value chain.
Optimising Report Formatting: Designed reports in a way that seamlessly fit into S&P DJSI submissions.
The Results
Thanks to these improvements, Chalice saw a significant boost in their ESG scores across all key reporting categories:
Chalice Mining’s ESG Score Improvements (FY23-24)
Category | Score | Change from FY22-23 | Industry Average | % Above Average |
Direct GHG Emissions (Scope 1) | 70/100 | +60 | 40/100 | +75% |
Indirect GHG Emissions (Scope 2) | 70/100 | +60 | 40/100 | +75% |
Indirect GHG Emissions (Scope 3) | 66/100 | +39 | 27/100 | +144% |
Climate Governance | 80/100 | No Change | 42/100 | +90% |
TCFD Disclosure | 75/100 | No Change | 46/100 | +53% |
Thanks to these improvements, Chalice maintained its spot in the DJSI Australia Index—a strong indicator of sustainability leadership in the mining sector.
What This Means for Chalice
By refining their data collection and reporting processes, Chalice has not only improved their ESG scores but also positioned themselves as a leader in transparent and responsible mining practices. Their reports now provide a clear, year-on-year picture of their emissions, making future sustainability planning easier and more effective.
What Chalice Had to Say
“We received our S&P ESG scores, and thanks to your efforts, we have achieved a significant year-on-year improvement in our emissions reporting scores. Also noteworthy is the standard of reporting compared to the industry (mining and metals) average scores. Overall, our ESG disclosures have been assessed favourably, and Chalice has again been included in the DJSI Australia Index. Many thanks for your support and expertise.”
